It appears to be some sort of pickerel (maybe chain). At 28", that is a long pickerel. I've caught similar pickerel ice fishing at Bangs Lake.

I stand corrected. The fish I caught at Bangs was a Grass Pickerel.

I'd say chain which can max out at 36".

Seen a few pike like that out of lake Geneva. Those nice markings seem to show up with the clear water. Not sure why. Guessing that's where you caught it?

Yes, this was Geneva. I emailed the local fisheries biologist and here is his response:

Hello,

It’s been a while but I’ve seen pike with that pattern before. Last time I saw this pattern I checked with a fish ID expert and he confirmed this is a rare but regularly seen pigment pattern for northern pike. Fun stuff, thanks for sharing! Let me know if you have any other questions.
